I’ve never found Natsume hard to relate to, even in earlier seasons. I grew up very lonely, still am, so I get him a lot. Loneliness isn’t this over the top traumatic thing, but it’s a pain that eats away at you, usually from early childhood and sticks with you throughout your entire life. Even if you make connections and friends later on, those lonely and painful memories will remain with you. Which is why I love Natsume Yuujinchou, it acknowledges the pain I felt growing up, and shows someone we can relate to, Natsume, bit by bit recovering from it.
